On 1 August 2025, M+R interior architecture will celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary - a milestone that symbolises a dogged commitment to spatial quality, social relevance and design research. Since its foundation in 2000 by Hans Maréchal, the firm has grown into an established name within interior architecture, with an interdisciplinary field of work ranging from hospitality and mobility to working environments, heritage and public space.
M+R operates from a clear design vision, in which sustainability is not just a technical criterion, but a fundamental starting point. We design spaces that anticipate change, resist obsolescence and are capable of long-term cultural, functional and emotional resonance. Our projects are approached as spatial systems that evolve over time and use - not as snapshots, but as sustainable contributions to the built environment.
Timelessness, circular thinking and material efficiency are integrated throughout the design process, from concept development to detailing. This approach results in projects where aesthetics and sustainability reinforce each other, such as the redevelopment of the iconic Evoluon (A'Design Silver Award 2024) and the Melkhal in Enschede (German Design Award 2025). Both projects exemplify our approach to redevelopment: preserving character but focusing on future use.
The office has been awarded international prizes several times in recent years:
German Design Awards (2020, 2025)
A'Design Awards (Gold, Silver, Bronze - 2019-2024)
Outstanding Property Award (2020)
European Property Award (2021-2022)
AZ Award and nominations for the Fenix, VENUEZ, and Renovation Awards
The recognition confirms the strength of our design strategy: analytical, multi-layered and deeply rooted in context. In 2024, this quality was also secured process-wise through ISO 9001 certification, formally confirming our structural approach and focus on quality assurance.
In addition to project practice, M+R actively contributes to professional discourse. Hans Maréchal has chaired the Architects Register Examination Committee since 2013, held jury roles for the BNI Prize, AIT Interior Scholarship (Cologne) and LAI, among others, and was a member of the advisory board of the Professional Experience Programme (PEP).
A quarter of a century of M+R is more than a chronological retrospective - it is a reflection on the role of the interior architect in a changing world. At a time when social transitions demand spatial answers, our ambition remains undiminished: to create designs that stand the test of time. Designs that not only function, but also inspire. Now and in the future.
