TRANSFORMATION OF A STANDALONE VILLA IN BAVEL
Private
Place:
Bavel
Year:
2020
Project:
The transformation of a detached villa into a contemporary home where the relationship between indoors and outdoors is naturally redefined.
The design is characterized by light, spaciousness, and a strong connection to the landscape, while preserving the original elegance of the existing house.

Description:
At the heart of the addition is a spacious sunroom that spans nearly the entire rear facade. This addition serves not merely as an extension of the living room, but as a fully-fledged living space where natural light floods deep into the interior. Thanks to the fully opening facades, the boundary between interior and exterior is virtually eliminated on warm days. When the facade opens, the living spaces flow seamlessly into the terrace and the adjacent pool, creating an almost natural continuity between indoor and outdoor living.
The material palette reinforces this spatial effect. A continuous floor finish connects the interior and exterior into a single cohesive surface, blurring the perception of boundaries. The water of the pool acts as a reflective surface that optically doubles the architecture and generates a subtle, constantly shifting play of light in the conservatory. The home is thus no longer bounded by the facade but unfolds as an ensemble that extends into the landscape.
The living environment within the existing villa has also been reorganized. The kitchen-diner forms the central hub of daily life, where cooking, socializing, and relaxing come together in an open spatial composition. A clear spatial structure, combined with high-quality materials, results in a understated and contemporary living atmosphere.
A striking feature of the interior is the new steel staircase. This sculptural element connects the various living levels while also serving as an architectural statement. The refined steelwork introduces a subtle industrial edge without detracting from the interior’s tactile quality and warmth.
On the top floor, the home has been expanded with a spacious rooftop terrace, offering a new perspective on the surrounding context. This elevated outdoor space introduces a second scenic layer within the design and allows one to experience the seasonal and light effects of the surroundings at different times of the day.
Finally, the villa has been made technically future-proof. Through the integration of a heat pump system and PV panels, the home has been made sustainable and energy-optimized, linking comfort and luxury to a substantially lower environmental impact.
The result is a villa that has not only been expanded but also enriched in substance: a home where light, space, materials, and landscape come together in a carefully orchestrated harmony.
