Design for the new council chamber

In the town hall of Drimmelen, the council chamber has been transformed into a space that reaches beyond the meeting table itself. M+R interior architecture designed a room in which form itself makes a statement: an oval layout that breaks with hierarchy and places equality between council members, the executive board and the public at the heart of the design.

Description:

Council Chamber Drimmelen: designing for equality
The oval is more than an aesthetic choice. Where traditional council chambers often preserve the classic opposition between those who govern and those who listen, M+R opts for a layout with no clear front or back. At the centre of the oval sit movable benches, lending the chamber an informal, approachable atmosphere while literally creating room for conversation outside the formal order of business.
That flexibility is no side note — it is the core of the concept. The same benches that serve as informal seating during council meetings transform the chamber into an intimate setting during a wedding ceremony: family members take their place there, physically embracing the couple. It's a clear example of how M+R treats multifunctionality not as a compromise, but as a design principle in which every element is given more than one meaning.
"Equality isn't an agenda item, it's a floor plan."

Local identity as a guiding thread
The design firmly roots the council chamber in its surroundings. A custom-printed carpet displays a panoramic view of the municipality of Drimmelen, while a photo wall brings recognisable local landmarks into the room. Above the meeting table, a ceiling ornament references the nearby Biesbosch nature reserve — a subtle yet effective way of giving sustainability and connection to the landscape a place within the interior, without tipping into symbolism.
A refined approach
The council chamber in Drimmelen builds on a design strategy M+R has previously applied in municipalities including Loon op Zand, Goirle and Drechterland: the idea that a council chamber can serve as both the heart of local democracy and a versatile gathering space for the community. With each new commission, this concept is further refined — in Drimmelen, visible in the precision with which local identity, functionality and spatial equality come together.
