Redesign of the promenade at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven.

Philips Stadium Eindhoven | Promenade
On Sunday, January 15, 1911, the Philips team played its first match on Frederiklaan, at the exact same location where the Philips Stadium now stands. The main grandstand of the current stadium underwent extensive renovations in the late 1980s. The plan involved expanding the main grandstand to include more seats, a more extensive program in a larger building with a new entrance, a conference center, founder and business lounges, and a Public Promenade on the second floor. As part of the “Welcoming Philips Stadium” program, M+R interior architecture developed a master plan for the stadium’s public spaces.

Description:

The master plan serves as a guideline for the stadium’s facilities and public catering, addressing all aspects of the experience. From communication to architecture and visitor engagement. In collaboration with Philips Lighting (founder) and Scherpontwerp (graphic design), M+R has developed a comprehensive plan for the Promenade and the 5th-floor ring of the main grandstand at Philips Stadium.

IMPROVEMENTS
The renovations on the south side of the Philips Stadium are part of a series of upgrades to the stadium. The renovated Promenade has been given an international, warm, and inviting PSV look. The Promenade is approximately 120 meters long and has direct access from the public area on Frederiklaan. The design concept for this long space consists of three sub-concepts, each themed around a PSV hero: the future: Memphis Depay; the present: Guus Meeuwis; and the past: Coen Dillen.

DARK
For the grandstand side, a dark aesthetic was chosen, featuring specially designed printed wallpaper with text and imagery. The club’s successes are also highlighted here. The entire wall has been smoothed out, and the frames of the recessed doors and similar elements have been incorporated into it to create a sleek, seamless wall. The door frames are fitted with metal trim. The doors provide access to the restroom areas; M+R has executed this entirely in red—the floor, walls, and ceiling—with circular LED lighting lines incorporated into the ceiling. Upon opening the door, a beautiful color contrast is created. The white urinals stand out strongly in this red space. The passageways to the stadium are equipped with illuminated ceiling elements featuring dynamic LED lighting. This LED lighting indicates when the match begins and can also be used in emergencies. Together with PSV, a plan was developed to create views into the stadium; even though the space is on the low side (under the stands), this provides beautiful added value. The areas surrounding the views are furnished as meeting and lounge spaces and equipped with black high tables and stools. The internal stairwell has been made visible with a fire-resistant glass enclosure and a view to the first floor. The staircase also serves as display space for the adjacent merchandise shop, where mannequins wearing the club shirts have been placed. The ceiling is finished in luminous textiles with dynamic LED lighting. The existing concrete floor has been exposed again and provided with a special coating. The old slatted ceiling has been completely removed and the entire ceiling has been spray-painted anthracite, including the installations. Wood wool (excelsior) cement boards have been installed against the structural ceiling for improved room acoustics.

LIGHT
Each theme is equipped with a large, efficient bar fully set up for fast service, particularly for peak demand during halftime (breaks). The bars are visually visible thanks to the wooden slatted ceilings with red and white LED circles. The columns feature steel cladding with integrated screens. Multiple screens have been incorporated at all catering points; these digital screens are used for promotions, current events, the 'menu', and sports clips. The floor finish in the catering area features special wood vinyl.

Behind the central bar (Guus Meeuwis), a large cold storage room has been installed for the beer tanks. From here, the entire stadium is supplied with beer. The beer tanks have been beautifully exposed. In addition to 10 beverage outlets, the central bar has 5 food outlets. Fixed benches and seating are provided at the bar in the Memphis Depay corner. The tables and chairs have a light ‘white wash’ finish. The latest developments in lighting, image, and sound are part of the overall concept. The lighting can be controlled per fixture. Beacons are provided to ensure that communication can be specifically targeted at visitors, if desired. In short, with the new design of the Promenade, PSV once again has a leading public space, for the next 30 years as well.......
