Project:

Sustainable transformation of a farmyard property in Brabant.

On a farmstead in Brabant, an existing barn has been transformed into a future-proof home, one that does not erase its agricultural roots but reinterprets them. The robust spatiality of the existing structure serves as the starting point, complemented by a modest living area where comfort, sustainability, and the living experience come together.

Description:

The transformation is characterized by a balanced relationship between preservation and renewal. The barn has been fully insulated and technically upgraded into a fully-fledged home. A new floor with underfloor heating forms the basis of the interior, while the walls and thatched roof have been insulated from the inside. This preserves the characteristic roof shape while ensuring the home meets contemporary thermal standards. In combination with a heat pump, this creates an energy-efficient and stable indoor climate, both in summer and winter.
The interior layout is clear and functional. The open-concept kitchen forms the central heart of the home, where cooking, living, and socializing come together within the original barn structure. The adjacent living room takes advantage of the height and spaciousness of the roof and connects directly to the garden.
More private functions have been carefully integrated into the space. The bedroom connects to a spacious bathroom with a shower, bathtub, and sauna, creating a private wellness area. This space also has a direct connection to the outdoors: the sauna is also accessible from the courtyard garden with a swimming pool and pool house. This creates a subtle interplay between indoors and outdoors, between relaxation and the landscape.
New steel secondary window frames enhance the connection with the surroundings. They have been carefully integrated into the existing structure and ensure maximum natural light without disrupting the original rhythm of the facade. At the same time, they bring a contemporary sophistication to the interior and significantly increase the level of comfort.
The barn house retains its raw, agricultural character but has been transformed into a modest and comfortable living environment. Here, the past does not serve as a limitation but as a foundation for a contemporary way of living.
