Description:

The Udens Duijn Recovery Hotel demonstrates how architecture and interior design can actively contribute to healing. In this hybrid environment—where healthcare and hospitality converge—the principle of the healing environment takes center stage: a carefully designed setting in which tranquility, orientation, and sensory balance support the recovery process.
Recovery Hotel Udens Duijn demonstrates how architecture and interior design can actively contribute to healing. In this hybrid environment—where care and hospitality converge—the principle of the healing environment takes center stage: a carefully designed setting in which tranquility, orientation, and sensory balance support the recovery process.
The building, designed by De Jong Gortemaker Algra, is characterized by a striking “canyon” that naturally guides visitors inside. M+R interior architecture translated this gesture into an interior that radiates warmth and comfort. Within the given parameters, the canyon was used as a spatial anchor point, around which the foyer, living room, and restaurant are logically organized.
Materials and detailing are crucial here. The combination of slate with oak accents and soft textiles prevents a cold atmosphere and brings tactility and visual calm. Inlaid rugs, indirect lighting, and a subtly staged fireplace stimulate the senses without ever being overwhelming. It is precisely this balance—between stimulation and tranquility—that makes the interior effective as a healing environment.
The design also demonstrates its ingenuity in practice. Flexible layouts, wheelchair-accessible solutions, and multifunctional elements ensure that care and comfort come together seamlessly, without an institutional feel. The result is an environment that not only functions well but also feels like a place where people can find peace and relaxation.
Udens Duijn emphasizes that well-designed spaces, where everything comes together—from wayfinding to materials and from lighting to acoustics—demonstrably contribute to well-being and a faster recovery. Here, architecture is not merely a backdrop, but an active participant in the care process.
