In 2013, M+R interior architecture, in collaboration with Koopmans TBI, delivered a thoroughly renovated and sustainably transformed office building in Enschede. At the time, the project was a benchmark for forward-looking workplace design: flexible, sustainable, and with a strong emphasis on interaction and collaboration. Now, almost twelve years later, we join forces once again to take the next step. As the world of work evolves, so too must the workplace.

From Entrance to Meeting Place
The reimagining of the Koopmans building begins at its very threshold. Where visitors once entered a conventional reception hall, they will now encounter an inviting and welcoming entrance sequence. A barista coffee bar will form the social heart of the new lobby – a place designed for spontaneous encounters between colleagues, clients, and guests, where the rhythm of the workday begins in an unhurried and human way. The remainder of the ground floor will be transformed into a vibrant social and collaborative hub. Here, a contemporary food and work café will provide space not only for a quick coffee or lunch, but also for informal meetings, collaborative work, or moments of focused concentration. With an integrated hospitality concept and a range of meeting facilities, the ground floor will become the dynamic heart of the building.

Green, Healthy, and Future-Ready
The original workplace concept developed in 2013 remains relevant today but is now receiving a fresh and thoughtful update. Additional greenery and new meeting spaces enhance user well-being and make the work environment even more attractive. Because the ground floor will now function as the building’s central social space, the existing “living rooms” on the upper floors can be reconfigured into more compact and efficient pantry areas. The sanitary facilities will also undergo a comprehensive upgrade, with comfort, hygiene, and aesthetics at the forefront – fully aligned with the building’s renewed standard.

Sustainability in Expression and Execution
Sustainability remains a guiding principle throughout the project. The façade will be given a new, warmer expression through the application of sustainably sourced timber cladding. At the same time, a large, glazed panel at the entrance will enhance transparency, bring in more natural light, and create a welcoming atmosphere.
Inside, carefully selected materials – from circular flooring solutions to natural colours and textures – will bring a sense of calm and timeless quality to the interior. Plant life plays an increasingly important role both indoors and outdoors, contributing to a healthier indoor climate, a more pleasant working environment, and a stronger connection to nature.

A Deeper Evolution
With this second transformation, M+R interior architecture and Koopmans TBI build upon a story that began twelve years ago. The building continues to evolve – in step with the organization, with the times, and with the people who use it. The result will be an inspiring environment where meeting, working, and relaxing coexist seamlessly – and where sustainability, hospitality, and future-resilience converge.
